Quay Place Closure

Some sad news today. Quay Place will not be opening again. We will still be supported to put on a final exhibition but our CREATIVE CHANGE WORKSHOPS group but will no longer be able to meet there. My Art Residency was due to finish in July but our online community will continue until September and Suffolk Mind are still supporting us.

I know many group members have been deeply upset by this, but be assured that I will explore the possibility of alternative venues and funding pools to continue the amazing work of ‘Creative Change Workshops’. When one door closes another door opens.

Black Lives Matter

I know that the world is in turmoil since the murder of George Floyd on 25th May. I, like so many others, watched the footage on facebook, not knowing what I was about to see. Would I have watched it if I knew how horrific it was? Seeing is believing! It made me feel physically sick and so angry. The hopeless injustice and abuse of power overwhelmed me as I watched a white policeman kneel on Floyd’s neck for over eight minutes, despite the victim’s cries of “I can’t breathe”. The onlookers tried to help but were forced back. I felt like their words were my words. Crying out to stop the abuse in desperation. Institutionalisation racism not only permits this to happen but encourages it.

I am not surprised that the protesters resorted to extreme measures when the police officer was fired but no charges were brought against him. I do not condone violence but the government needed to listen and take action. Thankfully he has now been charged along with the three others involved. The question remains however…What would have happened if it wasn’t caught on film?

I worry for the protesters that are now engaged in a civil war against Trump (who has added fuel to the fire). Many protesters have suffered greatly and experienced oppression first hand. Now is the time to unite and campaign for political, positive change. Let the anger and frustration be put to good use. Segregating and burning down communities will not help. Enough is enough. Now is the time to unite in a common cause.

To fight for equality, highlight inequalities and campaign for real change.

‘An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind’.

So i encourage people to write to their PMS, Governors and Leaders; sign petitions, use your voice online and to educate those around you. We all have the power to influence and enlighten. Use creative methods to peacefully protest, raising awareness and gathering in solidarity to find practical ways to influence culture.

We cannot allow this. We have a civic duty to take action, but how we address this, will be our legacy. Hate breeds hate. Now is the time to drop our weapons and fight with our powers to influence. Lead by example and be the change we want to see in the world. The Anti-racist movement is what is required. We must not be silenced, and yet, we must choose our words and actions carefully. The world is watching. Our children will face the consequences of how we respond. Rise up in wisdom and unity. What would Martin Luther King Jr. do? Keep moving forward. Black Lives Matter.

Portraits for NHS Heroes

I am not known for doing portraits but this movement is one close to my heart: The instagram #portraitsforNHSheroes inspired me to do these oil pastel pictures of my mum. She is a Staff Nurse at Ipswich Hospital and a front-line worker. I have included some process pictures so you can see the journey. Art from the heart!

Latest Commission 'Freedom' Oil Pastels

Here are some ‘work in progress’ pics of my latest commission. Having just watched the Grayson Perry Art Club on Channel 4, I can relate to the idea of portraiture not being just about capturing a likeness but about presenting the emotions of special moments with deep, meaningful connections resonating from the work. These impressionist style oil pastel pieces are based on photographs. In a time of lock-down these moments of joy are to be cherished. Commissions open.

Curve Balls and Plot Twists

2020 has been bloody biblical! I keep referring to it as ‘the apocalypse’ or a scene from The Walking Dead. I don’t mean to make light of the Covid 19 situation but am still in a state of shock. I recently shared a post saying ‘buy art now so you can look at something other than toilet roll’. Light humour is one of may greatest coping mechanisms but the reality of what is going on is no joke. I have been in isolation for the last week and have family working on the front line of NHS. I have been amazed by the community spirit of facebook groups offering to provide for people in isolation and going out of their way to help strangers. Faith in humanity restored!

Unsurprisingly I will be cancelling many of my up and coming exhibitions but the creativity output will continue! I am still taking commissions and able to use couriers to deliver orders. I have received some fantastic feedback lately in the form of testimonials which I had to share.

Priceless Treasures- My Greatest Creation

‘My Greatest Creation’ debuted at Art Fair East in 2018 and is now a contending submission for The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2020. The story behind the work:

At 18 years old I had been living alone in hostel (homeless) accommodation for 2 years and had some how managed to stay in school. I remember at 16, going out all night with my friends then returning to the hostel to shower and change before catching the bus to school (having had no sleep). 6th Form was better and I was studying Art and Performance Studies which I loved. Lancaster University had given me a conditional offer to study Art and Performing Arts which was my escape route from the poverty trap. My impulsive nature meant that I didn’t always make the best choices; often looking for love in all the wrong places. Needless to say that when I found out I was pregnant it was quite a shock. I knew that I would be bringing this child up alone and my hopes for a ‘better life’ seemed to have been shattered.

Despite the ‘Oh Shit’ moment, the idea of a tiny human growing inside me filled me with surprising wonder. I had an early scan at 8 weeks and saw what looked like a bean with a tiny heart beat. No arms or legs or anything just a blob. My blob. I fell in love at that moment. I know this is not everyone’s experience and I am certainly in no position to judge but I was blessed to have had such a strong bond from the beginning. Termination was simply not an option in my mind, so I considered this an ‘Eastenders style’ plot twist.

16 years later I can honestly say that my son is such a precious gift. Life was hard, I won’t lie but I kept moving forward. The University of life taught me some valuable lessons and eventually I did pursue higher education. I look back and see where I’ve come from and what a great future lies ahead.

This piece of art is not what some would assume to be a publicity stunt or shock tactics. Its my treasure, my story, my gold. Priceless not overpriced!

I made a large canvas and painted a heart upon it, then cut the canvas into tiny pieces and arranged them around the resin encapsulated pregnancy test. I embellished it with gold and iridescent pigments and poured out the clear resin to coat and capture it forever. The word survivor is engraved on a piece of metal in the centre. We are more than survivors we are blessed and the future is, as it always was, bright.
